What is IB?

International Baccalaureate or IB, is an international educational foundation founded in 1968 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

More than 5,000 schools and over 70,000 teachers have chosen to teach International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes, with more than one million students worldwide.

Generally, fees are higher at IB schools since annual fees has to be made to the International Baccalaureate Organization as well as the provision for staff training.

 

IB Curriculum VS A Level

The curriculum is made up of the DP core and six subject groups where

The three core elements are:

• Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
• The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
• Creativity, activity, service, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.

and the six subject groups are:

• Studies in language and literature
• Language acquisition
• Individuals and societies
• Sciences
• Mathematics
• The arts

On the other hand, the A-Level recommended curriculum is three H2 subjects and one H1 subject, of which, one of them must be a contrasting subject, in addition to

• Mother Tongue language
• General paper
• Project work

Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) carried out a research on International Baccalaureate students against A level students studying at UK higher education institutions (HEI) for 2012-2013 cohort. It shows that overall, IB diploma students compare favourably against A level students at HEIs in the UK.

 

 

 

 

Summary by IBO:

Results based on advanced analysis showed that IB diploma students were significantly more likely than their A level peers to attend a top 20 HEI.

Additionally, IB diploma students had a significantly greater likelihood of earning a first-class honours degree than did A level students.

Lastly, IB diploma students were significantly more likely to be engaged in further study after university graduation, while A level students were significantly more likely to join the workforce, without further study.

However according to the Ministry of Education:

A-Level and IB are internationally benchmarked qualifications for university admission.

All qualifications are assessed equally rigorously during the admission process and no qualification is accorded any advantage or disadvantage

IB Scores

The highest total available for a Diploma Programme student is 45 points.

Scores are based on the grades of 1 to 7 awarded for each of the six subjects, for a total of 42 points, and up to 3 additional points for the core components.
